Activities & Things To Do
Relax on the wonderful palm fringed beaches, which are some of Colombia's most beautiful.
Hire a golf buggy or moped to explore the island - golf buggy hire costs about 100,000 Colombian pesos (US $40) for 24 hours, while a moped hire costs about half that.
Take a kayak to the beautiful waters of Cayo Cangrejo (Crab Caye) and nearby McBean Lagoon and National Park. Alternatively, take a kayak around the calm waters of Santa Catalina island.
Have a local fisherman take you on a tour of the island to visit the tiny little surrounding (islands) such as Crab Caye and the Three Brothers Cayes.
Go fishing with a local fisherman - or for the more serious fishermen excellent deep sea fishing can be found in the waters near Providencia.
Trek into the interior of Providencia Island to see wildlife, rainforest and waterfalls. Hike to El Pico, the highest point on the island at 360 metres - the views of the distant reef, the turquoise sea and the island is quite spectacular from this high point.
Go horseback riding around the island and along the beaches.
Excellent snorkelling and Colombia's best scuba diving.
On Saturday's, don't miss the locals racing their horses on the beach at South West bay - it's a real spectacle!
See the old cannons and Fort on Santa Catalina Island that date back to the days of piracy.
Take an extended boat trip to some of Colombia's outerlying Northern islands such as Seranilla Caye, Seranna Caye and Roncador Caye (click here for photos and more info on these Cayes). It takes a few hours by fast boat to reach these remote desert islands. Permission to camp can be granted by the military (you'll need to request such permission in advance). Petrol costs are high, so you'll need plenty of money (or a large group to split the costs) to take this wonderful excursion. The scuba diving at these remote islands is legendary, and trips can be arranged by scuba diving operators in Providencia.
Eat fine, fresh seafood.
